Maggie's first ever Glasgow Night Hike hailed a huge success
500 people set off on a moonlit meander around Glasgow on Friday night to enjoy iconic architecture and raise funds for Maggie's at the same time
Groups of colleagues, friends and families, many affected by cancer, set out on a ten-mile walk around Glasgow tonight (Friday 17 September). Emulating the successful Maggie’s London Night Hike, which took place on the same night, the first ever Glasgow Night Hike is set to raise £100,000, including gift aid.
The moonlit meander showcased the artistic and architectural renown of the city, through exclusive access to some of the city's most fascinating buildings, as well as top entertainment, resulting in a festival-on-foot atmosphere.
The opening party took place at the University of Glasgow's famous Cloisters, with Night Hikers gaining exclusive access to GoMA and Trongate 103 (viewing the latest arts exhibits on display), Kibble Palace in the Botanics (hikers refuelled whilst enjoying the exotic plant life and entertainment from a string quartet), and Maggie’s Glasgow Centre for celebratory tea and cakes. Participants were also encouraged to take note of other architectural buildings which they walked passed on the route, such as: Sgoil Ghaidhlig Ghlaschu (Glasgow Gaelic School), The Mitchell Library, The Beresford, Mal Maison Hotel, The Teacher Building, Arlington Baths, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and many more.
Glasgow Night Hike builds on the amazing success of Maggie’s London Night Hike, which since launching in 2005, has become a highlight on London’s social calendar.
Maggie’s Event Manager, Claire Benjamin, said: “The Glasgow Night Hike was the perfect way to kick start the weekend – a totally original night out around Glasgow. The event vibe was fabulous with people of all ages and fitness levels taking part. Maggie’s Centres help people to build a life with, through and beyond cancer and thanks to all our Night Hikers for taking part and for their fundraising endeavours.”
